SEAOC’s SE Pathways to the Profession initiative aims to address the disparity of engagement and lack of diversity within the California structural engineering profession. Supporting students and early career professionals, the SE Pathways program responds to the June 2020 SEAOC Call to Action, which specifically calls on the Association and Profession to actively discuss and correct the impacts of the systemic issues that limit the advancement of our fellow engineers. The Call to Action sets forth two key actions which are principal drivers behind the Pathways efforts:
- The need for SEAOC to create opportunities within our organization to proactively support local students in underrepresented groups find success in structural engineering, and,
- A call to actively discuss and correct the impacts of systemic issues that limit the advancement of our fellow engineers.
Addressing these key drivers, SE Pathways to the Profession brings together students and early career professionals and engages them in dialog about engagement, retention and equity in the structural engineering profession. Each participant will have the opportunity to to share their personal and professional experiences with their peers and to provide insights and perspectives about how educations, professional associations, managers and firm leaders could better support their technical development and career growth. Each year a new Pathways Cohort is invited to join the conversation, to build relationships in an inclusive and supportive atmosphere and to create lasting change within their own sphere of influence and within the profession as a whole.
